And the iron wolf howled on the Curved Hill with a voice as loud as if a hundred wolves had howled. And the tops of the oak trees nodded, and the earth trembled, and the world stood in awe...

A long time ago, or maybe not so long ago, seven hundred years ago, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas rode with his retinue into the Šventaragis Valley at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers to hunt for the hairy forest bull – auroch. When he had hunted the auroch, he suddenly saw what a beautiful place he was in and decided to spend the night there. And his bed was made for him under a mighty oak tree, and his dream was guarded by a regiment of brave soldiers, and a standard-bearer was on duty at the flag, and a horn player was waiting for the signal, holding the horn in his hand...

And the ruler drowned himself in sleep, and when he was asleep, he dreamed of an iron wolf...

The dream was so vivid that Gediminas decided to ask the highest pagan priest Lizdeika what message the gods had sent him with the iron wolf.

“Oh, our mighty ruler,” said Lizdeika to him. “The gods send you the message that you are to build here a city as strong as iron, which no one will be able to conquer, which will withstand all the blows of fate, and the fame of its strength and greatness will spread throughout the world.”

Gediminas heard the highest priest out, and on the same day he gathered craftsmen and crowds of people and began the construction of the city of Vilnius, and when the walls were up, he proclaimed it to be the capital of all his lands.

And since then, for seven hundred years, the fame of the city of the Iron Wolf has been spreading throughout the world... And people flood here to seek the light of science, to touch history, to feel the greatness of the Lithuanian nation. A pagan altar somewhere in the crypts of the city’s Cathedral still preserves its memory.
